Predicted climate variables for the months of September, October, and November along the western region under a high emissions scenario were processed to created a index from 1 to 5 representing the optimal conditions for peak fall foliage, with 5 being the highest potential and 1 being the lowest. 

The storymap explores the science behind fall foliage, methodology behind the prediction, and interactive web maps comparing the late 20th century peak fall foliage with the predicted peak fall foliage.
